Darell Hammond, Co-Founder and CEO, KaBOOM!
Hammond spoke with PND about his organization's evolution, its efforts to build a hundred new playgrounds in the Gulf Coast region, and why healthy, sustainable play spaces for kids should be considered a necessity rather than a luxury.
PND: When you created KaBOOM! in 1995, there weren't many groups like it. To what do you attribute the organization's success?

Q:
For those of you who specialize in proposal writing for education, do you find advantages or disadvantages to seeking funds for schools?

A:
Interesting that you bring up fundraising for schools. In northeastern Illinois, I am seeing more and more public school districts and private schools hiring development directors. A few wealthier districts have been able to raise enough in private money to do without federal funds and accompanying NCLB benchmarks. I don't know what schools are doing in your area, but you might investigate your alma mater(s) to learn if they are seeking grants and would consider hiring an alumnus....
