"This was always something we wanted to do," Glaser said
in an interview with AP. "From day one, and I recommend
this to any entrepreneur starting out, we wanted to set
something aside and do good things with it."
The RealNetworks Foundation will fund support of free
speech and freedom of communications throughout the world;
will assist poor people in gaining access to technology;
and will work to improve the quality of life in
communities where its employees live. The Seattle-based
company will continue to fund the foundation by donating 5
percent of its profits each quarter.
According to Glaser, the foundation's focus on free speech
was suggested by the use of streaming media to circumvent
media censorship under Yugoslav president Slobodan
Milosevic. When Milosevic shut down Free B92, the only
independent radio station in Belgrade, the station turned
to the Internet and used streaming media to make its
programs available to local and international audiences.
"That was amazing to see," said Glaser. "It was a great
example of how the work we're doing could really make an
impact."
