The Levitt Foundation

The LEVITT FOUNDATION is an independent foundation incorporated in New York in 1949. The Foundation is interested in the environment as it relates to children and youth living in the five boroughs of New York City and on Long Island, New York.

The Levitt Foundation funds programs that:

  • Enable young people ages 6 to 18 to understand and value their environment, and take action to improve or protect the natural or built environments in their own neighborhoods

    and

  • Provide children and youth with ongoing opportunities to build their confidence and self-esteem, citizenship skills and leadership abilities

    and

  • Are sponsored by neighborhood and community-based organizations (rather than schools)

Since 1996 when the Foundation's Board of Directors approved this grantmaking strategy, the Levitt Foundation has awarded nearly $7.0 million in grants to nonprofit organizations. Annual grantmaking is approximately $800,000. Given the Foundation's size and limited staff time, proposals are accepted by invitation only.

The Levitt Foundation strives to be a responsible grantmaker. This Web site is an effort to communicate its funding approach and activities to the general public, as well as to current and potential grantees. The Foundation is a member and supports the work of the New York Regional Association of Grantmakers.
