2007 Grants for Palliative Care
National Palliative Care Research Center
NPCRC is funded through Mount Sinai School of Medicine: Brookdale Department of Geriatrics & Adult Development, New York, NY
In 2005, the Kornfeld Foundation awarded a seven-year grant to Mount Sinai School of Medicine (MSSM) to establish a National Palliative Care Research Center (NPCRC). After an 18-month planning period (2005- 2006), the NPCRC became fully operational in 2007. The mission of the NPCRC is to provide evidencebased research directed at improving care for seriously ill patients and their families. The NPCRC is open to researchers nationwide, coordinates multi-site research trials, provides funding for research projects, and provides career development awards to junior investigators. Support for final nationwide dissemination and implementation of NCP’s 2004 "Clinical Practice Guidelines for Quality Palliative Care, in conjunction with the recent National Quality Forum’s related "Preferred Practices for Palliative Care." First installment of two-year $50,000 grant.

of Grantmakers (NYRAG)
Support for Collaborative to Advance Funding in Palliative Care (CAFPAC), a new group, sponsored as a peer organization by NYRAG, initiated by the Kornfeld Foundation and other palliative care funders as outgrowth of several years of informal meetings. CAFPAC’s goal is to help educate funders and to increase support for palliative care nationwide.

2007 GRANT FOR THE ROBERT PACKARD CENTER FOR ALS RESEARCH AT JOHNS HOPKINS
The Kornfeld Foundation was instrumental in establishing the Center for ALS Research at Johns Hopkins Medical School in 2000. In 2002 the Center was renamed the Robert Packard Center for ALS Research at Johns Hopkins. The Center is dedicated to finding a cure for ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis a/k/a Lou Gehrig’s Disease) through aggressive and innovative research involving leading scientists and clinicians worldwide. By involving “cutting edge” investigators, the Center has created a model research program which allows for greater shared information and quicker response to scientific discoveries. With the completion of its initial five-year/$4 million grant, the Kornfeld Foundation continues to support the Packard Center at a reduced level.

2007 GRANT FOR THE KORNFELD PROGRAM IN BIOETHICS AND PATIENT CARE AT THE GREENWALL FOUNDATION
The Kornfeld Foundation awarded a new five-year $1,000,000 grant to The Greenwall Foundation to administer a research program in bioethics focused on the ethical issues that arise from treating individuals dealing with serious illness. The mission of this effort is to conduct evidence-based research that will identify practical, rather than theoretical, ethical issues and that will improve care for patients on an individual level. 2007 GRANTS FOR LITERACY ENRICHMENT PROGRAMS FOR NEW YORK CITY PUBLIC SCHOOL CHILDREN
The Kornfeld Foundation supports New York City public school literacy programs in the areas of reading, writing, and the arts. The Foundation is concluding its support of afterschool programs. Since 2004 the Foundation has focused on professional development for teachers, in conjunction with Columbia University Teachers College Reading and Writing Project, and on in-school teaching residencies conducted by professional arts organizations.

ArtsConnection Partnerships with PS 38, 39 and 130, using artist residencies to create and sustain whole school models of thematic skills instruction and faculty development (Brooklyn). Second and final installment of two-year $50,000 grant.
